CHAPTER SIX

June 10th

Dear Diary,

I don’t know what happened. One minute things were getting better between me and my sisters and the next they act as if they hate me. Now I’m starting to feel hate for them too.

Maybe it’s because nobody talks about mama around here anymore. It hurts too much, I guess.

And the stepmother makes me miss her more. All she wants is to tear us apart.

June 7th

Morgan popped out of bed when she realized she almost overslept. It was the last day of school and she had to get her sisters together or she would be forced to drive them. When her feet touched the floor, she rubbed her throbbing temples. Before getting up, she took a second to recall the events from last night. Once second she was drinking hot tea and the next she was out cold. Why was she so tired? She’d never been that exhausted before.

After resting for a moment, she grabbed her pink robe off the back of the door and walked into the hallway to get everyone up. “Grace!” she yelled rubbing her head again. “Lexia! Are ya’ll up? It’s time to get ready for school.” She would worry about Petra and Shaye later since they were homeschooled.

When no one answered her call, she walked downstairs and was surprised to see Grace and Lexia huddled on the sofa giggling. They were dressed and their hair was in order. Normally Morgan would have to disapprove some of their clothing because what they chose was either dirty or too revealing. But not only were their selections right, they were wearing new gear. “Why didn’t ya’ll wake me up?” Morgan asked. “I could’ve helped you get ready for school.”

They stopped giggling amongst themselves when they saw how upset she was. “We didn’t want to wake you,” Lexia said before giggling again. “So we let you sleep.”

“Why?”

“Roxanne told us not to bother you,” Grace said. “Especially after what you did last night. You were certainly in rare form.”

“What happened?” Morgan repeated.

“You were drunk,” Lexia whispered. “You got into daddy’s scotch. You kept dancing around the house with your t-shirt on asking everybody to look at your stuff. Please don’t lie and say you don’t remember that shit.”

Morgan’s face was flushed with embarrassment. “I didn’t ask anybody to look at my stuff.”

“You did. Roxanne has it on video and everything,” Grace continued.

“But all I drank was tea.” Lexia and Grace looked at each other in disbelief. Morgan sighed and said, “Where is she?” through clenched teeth. She was sure that the tea Roxanne gave her was filled with liquor.

“Upstairs with Shaye,” Grace said. “She hired a new home school teacher who doesn’t start until next week. So she’s helping her with some other assignments.”

“What about Petra?” Morgan continued.

“You know she got mad when she heard about the new teacher. So she in the backyard lighting matches.”

“Look, I know you both probably don’t believe me but she put some liquor in my shit. I wouldn’t mess with daddy’s stuff.
